I am a violinist myself- and have on a few occasions played it alone, but of course it is much better with a trio or quartet for the canon effect. I have played it alone with piano before and it works. If your question is solo violin, not the best, but if violin, viola and cello or some other trio combo yes it works

The whole point of a 'canon' is that it is a line played first by one player, then repeated by another while the first is playing the next phrase. So, strictly speaking, you cannot play a canon by yourself.
But the first violin part of Pachebel's Canon sounds fine with piano or bass instrument accompaniment.
Better with 2 other friends though...

The "canon" part of it cannot. The music is still nice when played by itself, but it sounds much better when more than one violin/instrument is playing.

Sure it can, I play it on classical guitar, it's a great piece for stringed instruments. Find the sheet music for solo violin, I've heard it played on solo violin and it sounded great.
