A certified copy is the one that is notarized by the state's dept of health. It is the original birth certificate according to everyone and anyone that will need it.
You should have completed a form while you were in the hospital having your child, and the state should have sent you a copy of the certificate weeks later (we got our daughter's about 6 to 8 weeks later). If you don't have one, contact your state and find out what you will need to do. You will probably have to pay for it, and you may have to prove who you are so you can obtain a copy.

If you are talking about the certificate you got from the hospital it won't do any good getting your child into school. You must get a certified birth certificate from your states vital statics.

The one you get from the hospital is just something for your records like a keepsake
When in the hospital you should have been giving birth record papers that are filled out and left at the hospital and they send that in to public birth records. You need to get in touch with your state birth record place and ask where your sons is at and if needed file for one.
This is something you need for many reasons such as school, state help. Its very important information you need to have.

You need a state birth certificate for a passport. My baptismal and hospital birth certificates, laminated state-issued card, voter's card, and driver's license were't sufficient documentation. It cost an extra $200 to verify I'm a U.S. citizen. What a scam.
