Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are generally smaller than Silky terriers. Yorkies usually weigh between 4 and 9 pounds while a Silky can weigh as much as 15. Silky Terriers are a cross breed (now recognized) between Yorkies and Australian Terriers. Aussies have more wirey hair and yorkies have very fine hair. So, they inherited a mixed hair that isn't as fine, but silky and a middle size between the two. Both breeds are very anxious though. They have a very strong attachment factor too. I hope this helps.

The Silky Terrier was developed in Australia, by mixing the Yorkshire Terrier with the Australian Terrier.
Here is from the history of Silky> The Silky is generally believed to have developed by crossing the Yorkshire Terrier with the Australian Terrier in Sydney in the 1890s, but breed historians point out that the Australian Terrier was itself still a developing breed at the time of the Silky's emergence, and, since no early records were kept (as is the case with so many dog breeds) it is likely that other crosses occurred as well. There were also breeding experiments with these crosses in the state of Victoria; it is suggested that Australian and Silky Terriers were first exhibited at the Melbourne Royal in 1872 as "Broken-coated Terriers, Black and Tan",< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Silky_Terrier
My little mutt is 1/2 Silky Terrier. There couldn't be a better little dog.

Yorkies have longer hair, for starters. Yorkies are smaller, 7 pounds and under, while Sikies run around 7-10 pounds. Both breeds require regular grooming, the Silkie's coat is especially prone to tangles and matts if left unattended. Both breeds are bright, intelligent, and bold, with the Yorkie having somewhat of a reputation for being a little more aggressive and the Silkie being easier to train. Yorkies can be difficult to housetrain as well. I've never heard anything one way or the other on the Silkies.
The Silkie has few health problems. The Yorkie, a popular one with backyard breeders and puppy mills who pay no attention to health as long as it can breed, can have a lot of issues, including bronchitis, early tooth decay, poor tolerance of anaesthetic, and delicate digestion. The very tiny "teacup" Yorkies often have serious health and behavioral problems.

A Silky is originally a cross between a Yorkie and an Australian Terrier
A Silky is a 10 lb dog of substantial body for strength but with fine bone for agility. They have a 'wedge' shape to the head (longer muzzle and flatter skull) with ears that stand erect on top of the head. They are a bit longer in body than tall at the shoulders. They are well muscled and extremely alert. Ready to please but with a stubborn streak if forced rather than 'ask' to perform a task. The Silky coat is just that "Silky". It can be any shade of blue from a light steel blue, to pidgeon blue to a darker slate blue and many varing shades in between. The tans should be rich and vibrant. NO BOWS PLEASE A Silky is truly a BIG DOG in a small dog suit!! They love to run and play outdoors, chase the squirrels and keep all those big dogs at bay! You can carry one around but they would much prefer to walk, thank you!
A Yorkie is a dog of approximate weight of 4 -5 lbs, (not over 7 lbs.). The head is shorter in muzzle and is more dome shaped. The ears are erect but may tend to flare to the side a bit. They usually have a larger base than a Silky ear. The Yorkie is a square dog meaning that it is no longer than it is tall at shoulder giving a 'box' appearance. A Yorkie is only suppose to be a 'slate' color of blue and the coat is usually heavier and floor length (when kept in show condition). A Yorkie is more of a toy dog than a Silky in that they readily become a lap dog. And love to be pampered and waited on.

Silky Terriers- The Silky Terrier is a true "toy terrier". He is moderately low set, slightly longer than tall, of refined bone structure, but of sufficient substance to suggest the ability to hunt and kill domestic rodents. His coat is silky in texture, parted from the stop to the tail and presents a well groomed but not sculptured appearance. His inquisitive nature and joy of life make him an ideal companion.
Yorkshire Terrier-That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance.
-HOPE I HELPED!!!

Silky adult Terriers tend to have grayish hair that falls only to just below their stomachs while Yorkie adults will have black and tan hair that falls to the floor. They look the same as puppies.

I wondered the same thing. They both must come from the same background. The silky is bigger. There are a number of breeds that have been divided into categories due to their size.
