Here are the tools I use to copy DVDS for my own personal back ups. I know some folks do not trust some sites due to all the junk spyware out there and virus stuff. But look at my answer history, you will see that I can be trusted. D/load the free protection I recomend. I trust the programs I mention below and use them. I also believe in try before you buy.

http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html......... - DVD Shrink Freeware will copy most DVDs but there are some it will not copy.

These 2 programs are great, 21 day free trial, and I have them both. AnyDVD and CloneDVD they will take off encryption and protection.

Ok grasshopper here is your answer. When you rip a movie, you essentially have a program that is "ripping" the copyright protection away so you can burn it. All at the same time. So you would need to bet a program that rips not burns. A lot of the programs burn DVDs but they are really talking about movies you make and simple stuff, that the movie industry will not lose money on. Or DVD movies that do not have the copyright protection on them. Look for DVD X copy Platinum, that will rip now. You will have to search for that one. Now they sell another one with the same name, but you have to watch it as it does not rip. The company 321 studios got sued and lost and had to stop making the dvds that "rip.". I heard to try Nero to copy but I have it but not used it yet. I need to to find out if it will copy or not. I got the Nero with my Sony 18x drive.

So if you rip a movie you are ripping the copy protection away and burning at the same time. Burning is to copy a DVD or cd that has no copy protection, e.g. home movies made from DVD or cd or maybe music cd.

As long as the movie is NOT copy protected, believe it or not, you can just do a Disc Copy with your dvd burning software. You don't really need to spend the 1-3 hours ripping the movie in that case. But that is to make an exact copy of the original.

A good program that I swear by is called CloneDVD (same makers of CloneCD. http://www.elby.ch

Google "AnyDVD" to see how to unlock copy protection on DVD. But I believe the site is slysoft.com

Google around a bit for DVDShrink. Great program. Rips a DVD, transcodes it to DVD5, and has built-in burning support.
