I ask myself this question all the time! I have no idea what the answer is though. I always ask myself do i really believe in God or do i just say i do because i'm suppose to? I dont think u should believe out of fear but at the same time God tells u to fear him. it confuses me and scares me at the same time.

People truly believe in God for several reasons, but the most important thing is inward experience. I think people should want to go to heaven instead of simply not wanting to go to hell, but I don't think it is necessarily wrong to continually be frightened about hell..... According to most religions, hell is a very real and unpleasant place, but I don't think people should base their faith off fear.
I don't believe in forced attrition, and being forced into believing, while never actually having any true beliefs, is not real faith it is just trying to keep from being tortured or whatever by twisted humans.
Lastly, while we should seek to understand our faith, sometimes it is good to proclaim that even if we do not understand every single bit of theology or doctrine, we will take a step of faith and know that ultimately our religion is truth. For instance the doctrine of the Trinity and the Book of Revelations is mysterious to me, so I just take a step of faith despite having total understanding.

Some definitely do. After seeing some answers I can't help but say, We KNOW about tidal waves and hurricanes, You can not compare "warning" people of hell the same as warning them about tsunamis and such. On one hand we have a known phenomenon on the other hand we have absolutely no proof of hell, or heaven. Believe or hell is a scare tactic. If a boyfriend/girlfriend said to you, love me or I'll kill you, is that a scare tactic, or are they just warning you?

I feel bad for you, that was your experience at a tender age. I don't know if was your parents are whoever but they probably thought they were doing right, but I guess it has not served you well. One thing you really need to understand is the Love of God. He loves you and died for you, not just the world, but for you. When you discover the Love of Christ that will be your focus not fear of hell, When fear takes hold of you pray to Jesus to help you know about His love. God Bless you dear soul. May this year you find out how much Jesus loves you.

heaven is about our will to do good unto others
hell is about wanting to do good to self
if we are selfish we are allready in hell
its about what we want
wanting not to go to hell is fine
think jesus forgives thus allows so to speak evil to be done
satan is going to jump on you
depends on us ,we want to sin in our heart we have sinned
when we die all pretence is wipped away,
god loves us and loves that we do and sek to do good or better
but we can only see the good or ill we see others do
jesus showed what love can do and satan showed what selfisness and authoritarian rule can destroy.
believing is enough ,a true believer lives in the fruits of what they believe
we all are believers
some believe there is a god others dont
some believe you can be evil, and not do any good
others believe we can force others to be good yet not see that of itself is evil
we must learn to love and have passion that gets us up in the mornings ,we are sent to find that we love
some loves uplift some loves destroy
its our own choice
but we must never be moved to goiod or evil of fear
if its frightening /or of fear ,its the wrong reason.

No...
A true believer loves Jesus and has given their life over to Him.
Sometimes this starts from being scared of hell,
but if being scared is the only thing you feel about God, I don't think you're truly saved.

I believe, because I have tested my faith, and it has always been proven correct. Yes, I do not desire to provoke God, but only because I believe in God. If I did not believe, why would i fear? My desire to do good and avoid doing things I know to be wrong comes from my belief, not a fear of punishment.
