Ok basically a long time ago I had highlights over my natural black hair color but about 3 months ago, I colored over it all just one even brown color which I liked very much. It faded and I went to the salon today to get the roots done and the rest colored so that the color would be even throughout.
However, I am but a poor college student so, to save a little cash, decided to blow-dry myself. This put me at a disadvantage because it was only until I got home that I saw it was too dark! It looks like my natural color-black :( I wanted it like a medium chestnut-type color.
Everyone knows coloring dries hair, but also it's obvious that with the 1st wash it will get somewhat (though not too much) lighter. However, the lady told me not to wash it in like 3 days so that the color would hold. I start class tomorrow and want it to look nice. I want to wash it but don't know if that will damage the already-dry hair somehow. What should I do to make it lighter SOON?

Go back to the salon. Tell them it's not what you wanted. They should fix it.

Well for tomorrow for classes, wear a hat, until then, save some money and get it re-died and this time save enough money to get it blow-dried at the salon, I'm not trying to be mean, I am serious, but if you don't want to wear a hat tomorrow, call your beautician and ask her if it's OK to wash it or not. Don't worry about it really, at least it's not hot pink when you wanted chestnut brown, lol, Good Luck!

Okay did you get it colored at the salon? if so you need to wait a weeks or so to color it again so it won`t fry your hair .but if you didn`t have it colored then do it your self..a way to save money is to have a cosmotolgy student do your hair ofcorse after they have masterd all corses they have to have a certain # of cuts, dyes, styles, and high lights be for they can graduate or get a job.. so it will benefit both of you..

Try on of those high light kits - you can get them at target or other places. It might not look as good as salon, but it will be lighter.

Use a clarifying shampoo on it. like shampoo 3 from paul mitchell. and it should take some of the color out. otherwise you can use a little dawn dish soap with your shampoo or baking soda . mix just a little with your shampoo and then condition afterwards..
