Hey there.

I'm thinking about going into the Air Force Academy via ROTC, but I'm kind concerned about the fact that I'm not quite the fittest person out there.

For example, I'm pretty good at most sports, but not good at just one, and I can't play at school due to me having to work. I can do a mile in about 9-10. Push-ups don't look so good, but sit-ups are competitive numbers.

I know that the military wants fitness, but is this the kind of "kill yourself hard" fitness that I saw when those Marines came to our school? Or is the AF less strict about that? I really don't know and am in the process of looking for advice.

So, if anyone could advise me about this, or provide me with a good website where I can find out real info, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Here's a straight foward answer for you-

The qualifications to get in are not difficult as already answered by a previous post. he qualifications to stay in are on the other hand. There are 2 physical tests administered each semester an aerobic and physical fitness test.

Aerobic test- 1.5 mile run- min for males 11:15
PFT (Physical fitness test)- Absolute minimums (which combined equal a score of 125 whereas min passing is 250)

2 mins for each event 1 min rest between each
7 Pull Ups
7' Standing Long Jump
58 Situps
35 Pushups
2:03 min 600 yard run

Max for each event is
21 Pull Ups
8'08" Standing Long Jump
95 Situps
72 Pushups
1:35 600 yard run

If you cant pass that test you'll get the boot, thats all I got.

On a different note the real Air Force fitness standards are more lax than USAFA so OTS or ROTC might be easier. As far as "trying out" the enlisted core, depending on your situation it can be a really great idea or totally not for you so get some info before doing anything.

On that note if you suck at life you wont cut it at the academy-

Hi: First of all you don't join the Air Force Academy, you must be appointed to any of the academies by someone of importance. ie a Senator, Governor or the like. You must have perfect 20/20 vision to become a fighter pilot so you chances are dashed for that. But speak to your local recruitor and see what other areas you might be able to work in that you might enjoy.

FIRST, You need an Appointment to the Air Force Academy with you can obtain through Your State Senator!

Without that you cannot get you foot in the door. As far a Physical Training, you need to be in top shape! NO WIMPS!

On line you can find the Presidents Physical Fitness site for High School Students Requirements! IF you cannot pass them, you will not pass the USAF's!

Thanks, RR

Enlist first before you decide to dedicate all that time to officers training. See how the Air Force treats you for awhile, then try for OCS after you have been in for awhile. Talk to a recruiter. He will tell you the same thing.
