Georgia O'Keeffe is famous for many of her Southwest desert paintings (including the skulls and bones) but she is hardly a fair representation of all the artists that have lived and painted the Southwestern deserts.
The kids would probably love to see some of the desert paintings of both Charles Russell and Fredrick Remington (except some of the battle scenes). Both artists became very famous depicting natural and realistic people and landscapes from the American west, including the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona.
There are more contemporary artists, like Gorman, Villegas and Wyeth who have created the very recognizable 'Taos / Santa Fe' look and style.
