I know a lot of people say "well that was done in the past before the modern conveniences..." Though that is true, it doesn't mean that they were done well. Sometimes modern technology improves the way cooking is done (or anything other than cooking(, that's why they were designed. So maybe the texture of the butter cream frosting in the past wasn't desirable so someone came up with a way to beat the mix faster and more consistently so that the texture would be much better and therefore overall what the frosting was on would be more desirable. I don't know, this is just guesswork. I found this question because I was wondering if it would turn out the same as doing it with an electric mixer if done by hand.

Yes. I don't think I've ever used a mixer to make any kind of frosting. If you use butter or stick margarine, be sure it is softened beforehand. Same for cream cheese if you are making a cream cheese frosting. Simple frostings are easy to do without a mixer.
Cream the butter first (I use a wooden spoon), which will make it easier to blend in with everything else (some recipes you can actually melt the butter first...if it is a chocolate recipe and you are using powdered cocoa, you can melt the butter and mix it with the cocoa before adding it to the frosting). When it is time to add the sugar, don't add it all at once. Add half of it at a time, and mix thoroughly between additions. If the recipe calls for water or milk, alternate adding part of the sugar with part of the liquid.
There are also some types of frostings made in a saucepan, and the heat makes everything easier to blend together.

I do it ALL the time. My favorite frosting is quite simple, and I never use a mixer, and it doesn't even take a strong arm.
Melt 1 stick butter (1/2 cup) and 4 oz unsweetened chocolate in a saucepan
Add 1/2 cup milk
add 1 tsp vanilla
add 1 lb powdered sugar
Stir to mix
Put the saucepan in the fridge for half an hour. Take out and stir a little more.

Yes, your arm will be tired but you can do it. Use milk to thin the frosting if it is too stiff.
