A bar is not just a place to drink, it's also (originally) a term for a tubular piece of metal. The term 'bar' for a drinking establishment comes from the brass rail (or bar) which used to be a common feature of the drinking counter (also called a bar).
In courtrooms there is (or used to be) a rail which separated the court officers and attorneys from the audience; an attorney who was allowed to argue cases in court was said to be 'admitted to the bar' - now a term for being licensed to practice.
Back when most Americans worked in or at least around factories, most people were familiar with the hazard of exposed pipes, metal bars, or other structural items. Walking into a bar was a well-known experience for inattentive workers, being both painful and embarrassing. So if there were a group of people and one of them walked into a bar (because he wasn't looking where he was going) you would think the others would take note and avoid the hazard. OSHA prohibits such dangers from most modern workplaces.
