Buying a puppy online, although some sellers are honest, is probably the riskiest way to get a dog. Most cities have groups or societies for the different breeds. They could direct you to a good place to get a purebred puppy. You might consider a mixed breed puppy from a shelter, however. Mixed breeds rarely suffer from the health problems that purebreds do. The most healthy dogs I've ever owned were mixed breeds that were so beautiful, they literally stopped traffic when I was walking them. Besides, they are unique and no one will have a dog exactly like yours!

No. And not only that, but online is the absolut worst place to buy a puppy from. You should never purchase a puppy until you've seen and handled it yourself.
Check your local rescues and classified adds in your paper. Also Shelters like the SPCA often have full breed puppies, especially right after christmas.
Don't get your mind set on a full breed either. Mixed breeds are not only cheeper, but they have fewer health problems and often are even smarter, easier to train, and have better temperments than full breeds. (When you have a mixed dog it has traits of both parents, but the mix also helps weed out heath problems) Though if you must have a full breed, research that breed and make sure you are prepared to take on the specific health issues and personality traits of the breed you choose. Dont forget training either. I suggest that you have everything planned out and ready before you get your puppy. Like have your vet picked out, what dog food you'll have, and who your trainer will be, before you bring her home. This will make it easier for you and your puppy. good luck with your puppy search!

If you're looking for a purebred the easiest thing to do is go to a dog show. You'll see all the breeds there, you can see the breeds you're interested in and talk to owners and breeders to find out more info on them. You just need to be courteous in picking your time - don't interrupt when they're trying to get their dogs ready for the ring or they won't want to talk to you. They'll also appreciate it if you know something about the breed you want and can ask intelligent questions.
Failing that, try the newspaper, some breeders advertise in the papers - just make sure you check them out thoroughly so you know you're talking to a reputable breeder not a back yard breeder.

No! The best way is to go to www.akc.org & find your closest chapter of the breed you like's club. Contact members & buy from a LOCAL breeder that tests & certifies their dogs free from genetic problems known to the breed.
Local breeders that care enough to join the breed's club are the reputable ones working to improve their breed & care about their future.
People selling pups over the internet are only interested in money - they can not meet or screen you as a good or bad potential owner, only base their sale on if you have the right amount of cash. No reputable breeder sells this way - these are puppy millers & backyard breeders - beware!

Do not buy a puppy on-line, they are normally from puppy farms (there are exceptions from the proper breeders, but you have to ask yourself do you want to own a dog that could have inherited all manner of behavioural problems from their parents as some breeder are only interested in how a dog looks in the ring rather than its suitability as a pet), also if they have been bred for the profit of the owner, have they have been socialised, have they grown up in a home or a shed etc.
If you have already decided on the breed that you want, search for breeders in your local area or check for adverts in your local paper and go and see them with the parents. While you may strike it lucky and find the perfect pet on line, do you really want to take the gamble of ten years with a maladjusted pet?

petfinder.com and nextdaypets.com are just places to find dogs. you can always go and meet them you just have to talk to their owner. you can always look in your newspaper or even at a local get together like a fair or festival in your town they should have information on rescue groups or other breeders. for me, online is the easiest way to find a dog or breeder. you just google your city/region, breed of dog. you will then get a lot of organizations that have the breed your looking for.

Getting a puppy on line is the absolute worst way to get a puppy. responsible breeders may have websites but they do NOT advertise on line especially on places like Petfinder or nextday pets.Irresponsible breeders are the only ones who advertise on places like that.Responsible breeders also do NOT advertise in newspapers.
Do NOT get a puppy at a pet store..most of these puppies come from puppy mills and ALL of them come from irresponsible breeders. Also most of these puppies aren't registered with legit registries either. Do not buy a puppy that is "registered" with such registries as CKC (Continental Kennel Club, Canine Kennel Club), ACA, World Wide Kennel Club, National Pet Registry, National Dog Registry, etc these are bogus registries set up by mills/BYb in order to con people into believing they have a registered dog.The "papers" from these registries aren't worth the paper they are written on
Go to the AKC site www.akc.org look up clubs in your state, get contact info and contact them. They will be able to give you names of responsible breeders in your area.
If your heart is set on a purebred make sure you fully research the breed of choice and taht you have a very good idea of it's traits, size, health issues the breed can be prone to, etc.
Check out shelters & rescues as well they may have exactly what you are looking for.
***** contrary to popular belief mixes are NOT healthier, smarter, easier to train, more even tempered, longer lived, etc then purebreds. They are just as prone to hip/elbow dysplasia, heart, kidney isses, diabetes, cancer, etc as purebreds. They also can be very stubborn and dominating as any purebred and they can have temperament issues too. A well bred purebred from a responsible breeder is far less likely to have health, temperament, training issues then either a mix or an illbred purebred*********

Of course there is. Try the shelters, there are quite a few purebreeds that go through there. Otherwise, you can look up and research breeders in your local area. Just please make sure it's not a puppy mill! Ask to see the parents, papers on both, and most importantly, the area the dogs are kept in!

Local breeders will have websites, seach your area to find them. Also look in the paper. Talk to your local animal shelter/pound for some rescued puppies too. Better to buy locally so you can go see the pup before you buy it. I'd never buy a pup online, I'd like to see it first, just in case.
