im 17 yrs old 5'8, female , wide hips but small frame.

What waist size (eg: 26, 27, 28) should I buy for jeans if my regular jeans size is a 1 or a 3?

Most likely a 27 would fit you to a T. However,using a measuring tape,you could always just go measure your own jeans and buy whatever comes closest. =)

Wide hips are a bit of a pain,though. I know how you feel. I'm far larger than you (37" waist) but my hips are... gods. 48? 49"? There's only 2-3 inches of fat in that,too. My frame is annoyingly out of perspective with itself (my shoulders are only 28" to the bone,my hips are 45" to the bone,to give you an idea). You're very lucky to have something somewhat normal. ^^

All I know is that a size 5/6 is about 22"

go from there?!? I'm thinking like a 19, maybe? Maybe a 22 would work, sizes are getting smaller, so I don't know how this would be affected by that...

of course a 1 in one brand is a 3 in another brand. So, you might have to look around and try a few on.

Of course you could just get a tape measure and measure your waist (around your belly button)

try the 28 jeans! but try them on before buying or make sure u shop at a store where you can return them or get your money back if they doesn't fit.

whichever fits you the best and looks the best on you when you try them on. not all jeans are equal. it depends on the brand and style and other factors. just have fun trying them on and buy what looks best on you.
