it hurts but it is not too bad. depends where you get it, how thick your skin is there, how close to the bone. some tat's on the spine and lower back can give you wierd feelings, tingling, numb. because all your nerve endings are there, and it hurts as well. i have a bunch, it's bearable

Each person is different, and has variable levels of tolerance to pain. As someone noted, it depends on where you get the tattoo, the size, whether or not you plan on getting an outline ( such as initials, etc.) or a fill in with color.
I too was not afraid of getting shots, and the first five minutes or so was a bit of a shock, as it is continuous as opposed to the slight prick of the needle when getting a shot. After that, my body ( and mind) got use to the feel, and as you see your work take form, the excitement usually overrides any fear.
Like others are saying, really think about what you want to get inked, research the place you want to get it done at, compare shops, artists, etc.
Also, 99.9% of tattoo studios are extremely careful about hygiene, sterilization, etc. Again, just research your shop and the artist therein. I think you'll do fine.
Also, a friend to distract you can never hurt!
Best of luck!

i got my first tattoo yesturday and let me tell u, it wasnt that bad at all. the only part that i had to take a break was when he was fillin in the color. (i have a dreamcatcher between my shoulderblades)
but a word of advice, if ure ganna get a tattoo, have it really mean something to u, so later on u will kno exacly y u got it and there wont be any regrets because it has meaning to u.
and in my opinion all this crap about tattoo's becoming a fad is stupid. its self expression. tattoo's will never die out. u have to get a tattoo for the right reasons and u wont regret it.
and also tattoo's are beautiful pieces of art. its in the eye of the beholder where the beauty truly is, dont listen to someone tellin u that tattoo are "ugly" "trashy" or "unatractive" its ure opinion that matters what goes on ure body.
just make sure when u get one that while they set up they show u the needle packages, sterilized and unopened and ull be fine :} happy tattoo-ing :}

Don't be afraid, it's an experience you either want to do it or you don't. So if you want the tattoo, then go for it. The most annoying thing of a tattoo is the noise. After you first feel the needle hit your skin the noise will be so annoying you wont be able to think of anything else. They are not painful! Think of the beautiful art you will have on you ones it is all done!

Ok first off....shops use brand new needles everytime and sterilized equipment....you do want to make sure that the shop you go to does that prior to getting your tattoo. They will open the new needle in front of you so that you see that it's new and therefore it has never touched another person's flesh. Re: all the people that keep saying that you can get HIV from it....there are no known cases from tattoo parlors where this has occurred. There are only 4 known cases and those came from individuals who got their tattoos done in jail. Learn your facts before you spout them people!

A tattoo doesn't hurt nearly as bad as a shot.

Nope, I have a tattoo and I want to get more. But have a doctor tell me I need a shot and I go in kicking and screaming.

Yeah you should be afraid. Unlike at a doctor's office the needles used may not be sterilized and full of life saving drugs, rather they could very well be full of debilitating illnesses such as HIV. Be afraid and do research before letting anyone come near you with a needle that was not doctor prescribed.
