I would just move your old stuff. Renting furniture would probably end up costing you more than it would to move everything. Unless you have the money and want a change, but take into consideration that if you have a party or something happens to any of the stuff you rent, how much will you have to pay on top of the rental fee?

I would sell the old cheap furniture and use the money to help pay for new furniture. If you rent new furniture, what will you do with the stuff you already have now? You would most likely have to pay for storage which is an unnecessary added expense. Renting just seems like throwing money away, since you'll be paying for it and then have to give it back...AND buy new stuff.

Don't rent furniture no point really. Sell cheap furniture, buy cheap furniture for less where you move. Sell and upgrade as finances allow.
Rent electrical stuff breaks down more and expensive to repair.
The Oracle has spoken.

If you buy your furniture then you cant return it if you end up not liking the furniture you picked out. But on the other hand someone has probably already used the rented furniture, and who knows what has gone on on that couch!

You should consider renting a furnished apartment. Moving furniture xcountry twice is hardly worth it. If you can't rent furnished then I'd sell or store the furniture here (only store if it's really nice) and get stuff from craiglist.org for the year you're away. Rent a steam cleaner, hire someone to clean it, and/or slip cover fabric stuff and used stuff is fine.

Get a furnished apartment, then spray the furniture down with germ killing spray like Lysol or something. You may want to get an egg crate or two mattress pads though. I've done this but hate the idea of sleeping on a 'used' mattress.

I rent my white goods, fridge, washing machine, set top box, TV, even my PC. I do it because these items new have a very short life these days and by renting I get upgraded regularly and also when anything breaks I just call up the Mr Rental and they fix it free of charge!

Honestly, I would sell my old furniture, buy new, and sell again before I move. Renting is expensive and they tend to rake you over...what if it got dammaged?
