Ok i'm getting a kitten in a week or so and i bought a really cool collar It has a stretchy elastic near the buckle.Its gonna be an indoor cat but i am afraid she will choke herself or hang herself or even worse so does the kitten have to wear a collar??

none of my cats wear a collar due to the reason of choking or hanging by accident...i dont suggest them even though they sure are cute...

Everyone here seems to forget that the MAIN reason to put a collar and ID on your cat if it is an indoor pet is in the event that is accidentally gets out!! This way if it is found by a neighbor or taken to the pound you will be more likely to be able to be reunited with your pet. You need to get your kitten a "break-a-way" collar, that will snap open in the event that he/she gets caught on something and will not end up choking.

Cats should always wear some form of identification, even if they are indoor cats. A high percentage of lost cats were indoor cats who accidentally got out of the house; they can escape in the wink of an eye. The best form of ID is the microchip, followed by tattooing, then an tag on a collar. The tags can be lost easily.
The safest type of collar is called a breakaway collar; it snaps to instead of buckling closed. It breaks off when too much pressure is applied to it.
Talk to your vet or animal shelter regarding micro chipping or tattooing.

Absolutely! I had 2 cats, and 1 kitten, the mother and baby were lost and never returned because I never put a collar on them, (I never planned on them going outside-i thought they would be safe) Many pet stores have safety collars for even tiny kittens...and none of them should be expensive. This way incase they get outside somone might see the collar and not be mean to it. Also this way if somebody finds them they will know they are not strays and return them to you.

don't put the collar on the kitten right away let it get used to the house. But it would be good to get it a collar and it would be best to get a collar with a bell that way you can hear the cat if it does hang it self or something you can get there before somthing bad happens.

not at all but it would be a good idea for it to have one incase it gets outside some kind of way my cats are indoor cats and they have collars for that reason only and if found hopefully someone will return them .. it wont choke itself if your put it on there correctly when you put it on if you can fit your index and middle finger between the collar and the cat then its ok and u have nothing to worry about

You are right to be concerned. I've known a few people who lost their cats because they got hung up on their collar when the owner wasn't at home. If your kitty is an indoors cat she doesn't need a collar. They usually hate them anyway. The only time I would use a collar is if you harness train her to go for a walk and there is a chance of her getting away, then a harness with a name and telephone number is important.

Cats need collars with a break away clasp to prevent choking. Once it's tugged at a certain strength, the collar releases to prevent accidents. Check your state laws, in Indiana EVERY animals has to wear collars plus have permanent identification that is not removable such as microchips and tattoos.

My cats are indoor but sometimes they see me go out and they want to go also. I put on their collars just in case they try to sneak out on me. Yup, I'm over protective with my girls! One time my dad accidently locked my favorite cat outside and I couldn't find her. I searched and called her....turns out she was locked in the shed!!! Anyway, it depends if your cat will like the collar or not. Make sure it isn't the chain type. Both of my girls have gotten their teeth stuck on that type of collar while trying to play with it while they were wearing it! Had to pry it off. I make my own collars now with so if they get stuck on anything it just snaps off. Plus you can decorate it really cute and have any color you like. One of my girls has a very cute pink panther collar.
Most cats won't choke with a collar juat make sure you can insert two fingers under the collar while your pet is wearing it.

None of my cats have a collar. When my oldest was a kitten I tried putting a collar on him, and he hated it. Alot of cats do. If your cat is going to be a indoor cat, then dont even worry about a collar.

It must be an elastic collar, fastened in a way that if your cat hangs or anything, the head can come out of it easily. My cat is indoor, but he wears one, in order to have a name tag for safety of not losing him. (He manages to get out sometimes, even from the balcony). But it comes on and off easily from his head.
