Family planning to drive to italy for holiday this year but have never driven in europe before. what route from uk do people recommend? Needs to be the easiest drive possible for a driver not used to driving on other side of the road. Also, want to hire a people carrier to do this in, any cheap websites people can recommend?

Fantastic drive my wifes family drive it every year and can be interesting if you go over the Gothard instead of going through the tunnel... we drive to Lido deli estensi and the quickest we ever done it is 23 1/2 hours... if you want to know the route give my brother in law a call and he will tell you exactly the way to go.. You can get routes from the AA, RAC, Expedia or such like web sites with a breakdown of the journey into yards. This I've found to be very difficult to follow because they give you very precise directions (by that I mean they tell you at a roundabout take the 3rd exit and travel 38 yards on the exit road) so you end up with reams of paper just getting to the nearest motorway from your own town.

I've driven in Holland and Spain and believe me just driving a left hand drive car starts out a nightmare, until you get the hang of it.
Whenever you go to change gear you go for the door handle. It takes about 3 days to get the hang of it, never mind their versions of the highway code (if you're planning to cross a few countries...ie from France or Belgium).

Me personally I'd fly there and hire a car there.

I did it from London very last 12 months in would. We were given the ferry to Calais. This changed into the itinerary: 1st day: Calais to Reims 2d day: Reims to Dijon, Dijion to Macon third day:Macon to Lyon, Lyon to Marseille 4th day: Marseille to high-quality, high-quality to San Remo(in Italy already). From San Remo we went to Venice yet in case you'll Florence you should save on with the street going south. i understand it type of feels somewhat a lengthy itinerary yet we would have beloved to be certain truly France to boot. i guess you would possibly want to take some bits out and not in any respect preventing in places. We got here upon Marseille very busy yet exciting in a fashion, also high-quality changed into complete because of the cinema pageant. Montecarlo might want to were yet another stop on the thanks to Italy however the GP changed into on that week end for this reason truly busy. on the previously we did Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France and reduce back to London. i imagine you would possibly want to take exhilaration in it whichever way you flow.

your best of sticking to the main motorways, presumably coming from calais, head to paris then head for lyon as this puts you about 100 miles from the border of italy where you should end up near turin and milan.

as for driving on the other side of the road.... your just going to have to get used to it, its really us brits that drive on the 'wrong' side of the road.

out of the major care hire companys, i find carhire3000 to be the cheapest although I am unsure about their people carrier costs or even if they do them atall.
