a dog's sense of smell is what makes them a dog. any dog will do this. some more than others. pits have been trained to be great search and rescue dogs because of their high trainability and drive. they do have a rather powerful nose. if you want to put that to work and your dog is healthy and active enough. and well trained and socialized, contact your local search and rescue group and inquire.

Maybe there is a female dog in your area that he is smelling. Male dogs that arent fixed have a one tract mind...they have great sense of smell and if there is a female in the area it will be the only thing they will think of.

Yes, my pit is the same way. I have heard that when a dog sniffs, it is the same thing as humans reading the newspaper. They are finding out information. When I get home from work everyday, my pit sniffs me from head to toe, and God forbid if I have been around another dog. He just really doesn't like it.

I think its just typical behavior for any dog. Pitts aren't one of the breeds that are known or bred for their sense of smell like Bloodhounds for example, but my Pitt always checks out everything by smelling it, including me.
