...if you didn't have "Heaven" around as a back-up plan in case you don't make it?
Seems like people are always asking about atheists and foxholes... now I'm asking theists to hypothetically put themselves in the shoes of a non-believer. Would you fight for a noble cause if you didn't believe in God? Would you put your life on the line for your country? An animal? A stranger? Your friend? Your mother? Your child?

I know Christians have died for their respective countries. I know atheists have as well. I'm asking a HYPOTHETICAL question. If that's not something you can wrap your head around, I'd suggest refraining from responding.

I really dislike most of the "catch phrases" that Christians, and other people have. Most of the time they alienate the very one that they are trying to talk too.
I think that I would, I hope that I would, fight for a noble cause without the promise of heaven.
I believe that there are many good and noble people that are in our world. Humanitarians. Soldiers. Whatever their particular gifting and talent may be. I just believe that if God is allowed to expand that gift, for His glory it will be multiplied.

Do what is right. God or no God. If you're doing it for a praise from God, then obviously you missed the point of a sefless act.
Interesting. I would be an atheist but God told me not to join. Said something about not providing Dental.

Zero, Just a comment on some of the comments.
It is interesting how many Xians say that they are unable to to imagine there being no god, or not believing in him. It shows very little imagination. Yet everyday on this forum, atheists are asked equally hypothetical questions. ("what will you say to god when you meet him after death" "how will you feel when you are burning in hell ") I note that atheists often will attempt answers at those...granted, they are often sarcastic. But hey, we're dealing with childish delusions here, it's hard to take it seriously.

historically it has been noted that on many occassions, while in the heat of battle or on the brink of death, a staunch atheist has called out to a god he doesn't believe in. Its not an all encompassing fact, but something worth noting. As far as causal reason to be in a 'foxhole' (usually a metaphorical use these days because of the change in war tactics), the christian and the atheist have similar reasons for being there (saving country, family, etc), but it would be rare for a christian to declare on the brink of his death "God doesn't exist!".

I would be willing to fight for my country or a noble cause even if I didd't believe in God.

It is not a back-up plan as you suppose, it is the primary objective.
We are in a fight every day for a noble cause to share with those whose life is on the line
We lay our life on the line by coming here and answering you instead of doing something else.
Keep questioning and fighting against the truth, Paul (Saul) did that for awhile too. :)

Logically, only atheists should be found in foxholes. The theists should
1.) be comfortable with God's care and protection
2.) be eager to take a bullet so that they can get to Heaven faster.

a bit of a half point. Christians have died for their country, for animals, for strangers. You do not have to be a non-beleiver to do those things. asking christians to put God aside is like asking you to put your question aside before you ask it. Its like combining matter with anti-matter. Would an atheist imagine there is a God to answer a hypothetical question? I think that would be a bit overwhelming.

I know God exists and I know what His plan is for me in a general sense. Because I believe in this I am willing to die for it, just as an atheist believes that their cause is worth dying for. I understand your point, but the truth is that I believe in God, and I cannot remove myself from that, just as you cannot romve yourself from gravity.
