I am being charged through the nose for the co2 emmisions through the current road tax anyway. i could see the point if by paying for the offset the road tax would reduce accordingly but this seems to be another way to penalise 4x4 drivers. what do you think?

Another government rip-off. The amount of potential CO2 savings from the British motorist is equivalent to a drop in the ocean. It will do absolutely nothing to stop global warming. And what is the point? With countries like China opening a new coal fired power station every day it is just gesture politics. The only people able to do anything are the world's super powers, the oil producers and the car manufacturers. Our government could do so much more than anything the public can do but it chooses not to. Why doesn't the government do something radical like make all buses free for everyone and compensate for it by raising the car tax by a significant amount. That would be a real choice for the British motorist. Or what happened to all that hype about hydrogen based fuels? Or what happened to that Vauxhall VX220 prototype a few years ago that was capable of doing nearly 100mpg and 0 - 60 in about 4 seconds? Then, in 2004, the car manufacturers voted the Mazda MX-8 as the European car of the year - a car only capable of doing 26 mpg, which is far less than my Land Rover can do. The technology exists to absolutely minimise CO2 omissions and our reliance on fossil fuels but guess who would lose out if that happened?

Keep buying the best car on the road - a Land Rover, then perhaps the government will get the message that the public is on to their scam.

Its just another form of stealth tax, consider this, exactly what will happen to that £85? it'll go into the treasury's coffers thats what. The governments only commitment to enviro mentalism is to take cash off us at every available opportunity. All president Bliar has to do is stand there on tv in front of a load of mentals and say oh yes were introducing this levy to help the envionment - my backside they are. What the government are doing is using the mentals to gain approval for draconian tax-raising measures, keeps the mentals happy because they think they're being taken seriously and getting there own way, suits the government because thyey're creaming more money off of us, and all the time the motorist is bending over and taking it up the poo chute. The sooner we get rid of Bliar and his mob the better.

Refuse to pay - demand an £85 discount on the cost of your new Landrover or refuse to buy, the big car manufacturers have got plenty of cash and clout - why dont we use them like the government uses the mentals? If they get fed up losing sales or paying the offsetting theft maybe they'll start lobbying and raising a stink.

I see the usual '4x4 = gas guzzler' ignorance is on display again.
My daily driver is more economical than the neighbours' estate car. It is also 15 years old, and will last that long again. It therefore has a damn sight less impact than a eurobox that lasts 4-5 years.
My other is 44 years old this year. How many so-called 'low impact' cars will last that long?
Perhaps we should all buy a Prius - after all, they only use 50% more energy to build. Oh, and the batteries only last a couple of years (at £2k per go) - very efficient.....

And yes you are being penalised btw....

cars are expencive to run, LandRovers are no different, infact they cost more to run. Stop compaining and pay it, or buy a bike, or walk. It costs more becasue the companies are taxed on it, with the regular GST, and then also environmental taxes, (I'm going from Alberta, Canada).

via fact we ought to REDDUCE the quantity of oil we are applying. Burning oil and coal is the main substantial resource of the CO2 that's inflicting international warming. as properly, absolutely everyone who invests interior the fssil gas industry is throwing their money away. Its starting to be to be out of date. There are greater beneficial and greater low value uncomplicated uncomplicated approaches to produce skill--new technologies and ingenious approaches. that's the place the money is. Ten years from now-in all danger faster--oil is going to be a declining industry.

I've heard that Offsetting doesn't actually work - I'm not saying planting trees is not a good idea - I'm saying it doesn't offset the carbon we produce.

I think you should refuse to pay it, and refuse to buy a new landrover, and take public transportation where ever you go since you don't seem to understand the meaning of "compulsory"

i think £85 is nothing compared to the cost of a new 4x4, they need to increase the levy significantly to make people consider if they really need such a gas-guzzler.
