The pain is in the middle of my back. It comes and goes but has been there for a good while.

if this is in the centre of your ribcage and centre of the spine (thoracic spine) it could be arthritis see an osteopath sooner the better, better to spendd £30 now than wait for months for the NHS

Arthritis of the spine can cause pain any hour of the night or day' seeing as I have that pain but my doctor said I should not take medicine as it is habit forming, really I walk every day and that does keep my spine lose and if I am having a bad day I will take a Tylenol

I'm a nurse. Oh a number of things. It's good you want answers. I would see a doctor for a proper diagnoses. Take care and no pain should be ignored.

any other symptoms - is it all the time / a one off?
if its only after eating then heartburn can cause pain there.
