From some of the answers, it is obvious that A LOT of people do not understand even the basics of evolution. NO ONE has said we evolved from apes or monkeys! We had a common ancestor. Get it straight.
Why are so many afraid/ offended by such a concept? Is it a deep fear of death? can't stand that anyone should think/ believe any differently than you all? that is the only thing I can make of it....
This is not a matter of spirituality, it is a matter of observation.
Here is a link to give you the basics! If you are going to say anything about it, at least know what you are talking about, for goodness sake!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Introduction_to_evolution
p.s. no one is trying to "disprove" the bible. Everyone knows that certain towns and certain events have cross referencing in some ancient texts. The Hebrews were very good at recording names and events, so were the Romans and Greeks. Many times things are confirmed , but there is a "different p.o.v. " on the event (s). The dead sea scrolls and the Torah have been used as references for archaeologists along with Roman, Egyptian, and Greek texts for many, many years. Still do not know why people think that anyone is trying to prove "no God" or "no evolution" or "yes evolution" via this route... it is just plain silly to think so..
For many people, the creation myth is just that, a myth... for others they want to believe that the very cleaned up and very politicaly motivated King James VERSION of the bible is the "be all and end all". That is their perrogative, but to close your mind and then expect everyone else to follow your beliefs, well, that is just delusional.....

Why do Christians get offended when a scientist says we came from primates, but when a preacher says we come from dirt, its OK?
I am Christian. I am not offended by what "Scientists" or any one else says on the origins of man. Time corrects human error over and over. "Scientist" also said the earth was flat, that the sun revolved around the earth just to mention a couple.
Science is a form of religion just as materialism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam. Man puts faith in what he chooses and lives his life according to the belief system of his faith.
As a Christian I know Science has a great value to us all but I also know science has its limits. I also respect the freedom of every person to choose his own faith.
My question is can we "mankind" respect people with different views or will we attack those of difference?

We were created by God. Because the dust of the earth was used, doesn't necessarily mean squat.
I don't get offended when a scientist says we came from primates, I just find many holes in your "theory".
Evolution violates many of the same scientific methods that it used to try to prove it is fact. I have seen many post that it is a fact. IT IS NOT!
I just say there is just as much "proof" for creationism to be a theory and to not just teach one side of the story. Leaving "faith and religion" out of it: We have archaeologically found:
Law code of Hammurapi
Beni Hasan Mural
Ruins at Jericho
Mesha Stele
Merneptah Stele
Shishak Relief
Edict on Cyrus Cylinder
Dead Sea Scrolls
I could go on.
God Bless

Christians can easily be offended by any lie that tends to degrade humanity.
The thing about being descended from monkeys is a guess, and it's a very bad one. By all known evidence, human beings have never been observed evolving into another species, and there has never been in recorded history any other species even close to homo sapiens.
Speciation can only really occur in less complex life forms, like bacteria and plants.
As for the "dirt" part, you're missing the point of the story. Genesis 2 describes us not as being made of dirt but of being alive as a direct result of God breathing his own spirit into our bodies, and since all life forms return to the dust, our status as being God's children is an honor, not an insult.

Men are more than mere meat machines. Saying that we are descended from primates suggests that we are not. OTOH, even though God made us from dirt (which probably evolved through primates into us), it was a specific act by a loving Creator.

They are both bogus interpretations. Scientists have proven Darwin's theory wrong. Read Forbidden Archeology and The Hidden History of The Human Race, By Michael, A. Cremo. They have heaps of evidence that man was way more advanced millions of years ago and they didn't look like apes or cave men. AS far as the Bible idea. The body is made of earth, fire, water, air, ether, mind and intelligence. So Dirt is only partially true for the bodily conception. We are not the body we are eternal spirit souls. It is evolution of the soul that is truth not the body.

They get offended at anything and everything that might make them think!
Like the guy below, even though the first two chapters of his holy book clearly say, and repeat, that we were made from dirt, he denies that, in hopes of something nobler.

Well, I'd rather come from dirty than a monkey. Maybe YOU think your mommy was an Ape or that Daddy monkeyed around, but I don't! I come from better stock than that.
But, they are, thank goodness, no longer saying that. Now we are a separate and distinct species.
And, finally, SCIENCE, too, says we came from dirt. Primordial muk, to be exact. A muddly slime remembling a cesspool.
How does it make you feel you know you got it wrong!

Ahhhh... no Preacher says we came from dirt.
We were created as whole human brings - not from apes or evolved from the slime (which God would have made anyway)
The point is we came from God, not some series of accidents that is statistically impossible.
