Which of the two has more potential for advancement?

Both plastic and cardiothoracic surgeons make plenty of money, and they both have major pros and cons. To be a successful plastic surgeon you will most likely have to work in a large city, but the field is very competitive and requires alot personally to be a good plastic surgeon, you have to be personable and make the patient feel comfortable enough to trust you with their looks. A cardiothoracic surgeon could probably work anywhere but it is more stressful day to day. It still depends on what you want, you should shadow some doctors and see which is the best fit for you, they will be able to tell you everything about the fields they are in and you will see what being a surgeon is all about.

What do you like, and what are you looking for? Plastics will probably bring in more money without as much stress. Cardiothoracic is much higher stress but you will go home each day knowing that because of you, some child will know her grandfather; people will plan parties instead of funerals; and if you go into pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, kids will grow up. It all depends on what you want.
