And why on earth would someone follow a "faith" based on hate and destruction? I just don't get it. It seems like pure evil to me.

Well that's because you've been given the Islamophobe version of Islam. Islam does not teach anyone to kill anyone unless out of justice (for a murder) and out of self defense. Simply being a non-Muslim (we do not call them infidels) is certainly no reason for taking someone's life.

What the Quran says about non-Muslims:
60:8-9 "As for such [of the unbelievers] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, God loves those who act equitably. God only forbids you to turn in friendship towards such as fight against you because of [your] faith, and drive you forth from your homelands, or aid [others] in driving you forth: and as for those [from among you] who turn towards them in friendship; it is they, they who are truly wrongdoers!"

9:6 “And if anyone of the Mushrikoon (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) seeks your protection then grant him protection so that he may hear the Word of Allah (the Qur’an) and then escort him to where he can be secure”

3:64 "Say: O People of the Scripture. Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partners unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him)."

5:8 "O YOU who have attained to faith! Be ever steadfast in your devotion to God, bearing witness to the truth in all equity; and never let hatred of any-one lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Be just: this is closest to being God-conscious. And remain conscious of God: verily, God is aware of all that you do."

16:125 "CALL THOU [all mankind] unto thy Sustainer's path with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly manner- for, behold, thy Sustainer knows best as to who strays from His path, and best knows He as to who have been guided."

18:29 And say: "The truth [has now come] from your Sustainer: let, then, him who wills, believe in it, and let him who wills, reject it."

2:256 Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

42:48 But if they turn away [from thee, O Prophet, know that] We have not sent thee to be their keeper: thou art not bound to do more than deliver the message [entrusted to thee]. And, behold, [such as turn away from Our messages are but impelled by the weakness and inconstancy of human nature: thus,] when We give man a taste of Our grace, he is prone to exult in it; but if misfortune befalls [any of] them in result of what their own hands have sent forth, then, behold, man shows how bereft he is of all gratitude!

Well, you could ask the same of the other two Judeo-Christian faiths. There are more instances of God commanding that some group or race or whatever be wiped from the face of the earth than you can shake a stick at, whether you are paging through the Bible, the Torah or the Qu'ran.

It wasn't that long ago that good Christians were burning innocent people because "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live", and it's because of the Catholic Church's little foray into the Middle East during the Middle Ages, that Christians and Muslims have had problems ever since. Keep in mind that, up until the Crusades, the Islamic world was the cultural and academic center of the Western world. That's where our science, mathematics and surgical skills all come from, and a thousand years before we in the West started allowing people to worship as they please, there was a measure of religious tolerance and freedom in the Islamic world.

All I'm trying to say is that religion is a matter of interpretation. I often imagine Jesus and Mohammed sitting upstairs looking down at us, both going " 'Oi Ve!' look at what they're doing in my name THIS time!"

We have to keep in mind that these books, for all their power and majesty, were written by people who were interpreting their experiences and the events around them. And that what they said and did is often taken out of context by followers of the religion because it's convenient to do so.

At the end of the day, religions are the work of man, created to serve a particular purpose. Christianity as a modern religion was created by the Emperor Constantine as a tool to unite the fragmenting Eastern Roman Empire. Before that, there was only the Christian faith, without any of the ugliness that the religion introduced. The same can be said of Mohammed's teachings which, if you care to take a look, are actually every bit as gentle and loving as Jesus' were.

Your question has already assumed that Islam teaches peple to kill all infidels. I have read the Qur'an, I know the history, and I know about the history of Islam.

I'm not a Muslim, but this much I know for certain, Islam does not teach what you are claiming. You may not know how Islam started or what the situation was at the time. I don't have the time to clarify it exactly. Suffice it to say that Muhammad proclaimed monotheism to very barbarous and polytheistic tribes. These tribes treated women unjustly and were very warlike and violent. Muhammad condemned these evil practices and promoted justice, peace and honesty and upheld the rights of women, slaves and others. Muhammad taught that all were equal in the eyes of God, whether black, white or whatever. He taught that the poor should be fed and the orphan cared for. He taught that aggression and warmongering was wrong. In Islam, only self-defence is permissible. The Qur'an requires that, if the aggressor is willing to stop attacking you, you also should lay down your arms. War is condemned totally. If ever a self-defensive war is necessary, innocents were not allowed to be killed. The Qur'an even forbids cutting down trees during battle or destroying crops!!!

Muhammad was involved in a long war of self-defence, during which the warlords of His tribe attempted to kill every last Muslim man, woman and child. He defended the weak and opposed injustice, eventually taking Mecca with no resistance and no bloodshed. After having taken Mecca, He forgave His enemies and killed no won in revenge. This was contrary to everything His tribespeople did. Muhammad was known not just for His justice, but also for His trustworthiness, piety and kindness.

"SuperAgnostic" gave a list of conflicts which Muslims supposedly caused. A similar list for conflicts caused by Christians would be pages long. The problem is not Islam or Christianity. Both are religions of love and peace. The problem is human beings, especially those that use religion to justify their own ends.

"Earl D" is quoting verses totally out of context. Verses in the Qur'an referring to fighting infidels were written in the context of the large pagan armies which were attempting to kill Muhammad and all His people. "Infidel" just means one who is not faithful, one who has not faith. They did not have faith in the existence of one God. That is something everyone can agree on. They were polytheistic pagans, and hence, "infidels". There is nothing in the Qur'an saying you should kill all infidels. On the contrary, the Qur'an promotes peace with the infidel leaders of Mecca if they only just stop attacking them! Obviously, if Muhammad did not defend His people, they would have been wiped off the face of the earth and Arabia would still be filled with bloodthirsty tribes of warriors, looting eachother and continuing the pre-Islamic practice of burying girl-children, something Muhammad condemned.

No. Islam is a faith very comparable to Christianity, with different teachings of direction, notwithstanding the dogma has similarities in structure. those who evaluate people to be infidels are extremists. that's partly depending in faith, and partly depending in the U. S.'s ridiculous overseas rules. yet killing non-Muslims isn't portion of the teachings of Islam. apparently, the time period "jihad" or "holy conflict" grow to be no longer created as a time period for the conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims. it truly is the time period for the conflict between the Sunni and the Shi'a, 2 sects of Islam which chop up even as Muhammad died, scuffling with over who his successor will be. that's in trouble-free words in the near previous that the observe has all started to be utilized in words of world hatred and terrorism, and conflict hostile to our custom.
