It's from minute leakage from the blood vessel at the insertion site, sweetie.

Keep a little ice on it, and it will be gone in a couple of days. If you feel any pain, or if it's starts turning red, return to the donation center and have them check it.

The discoloration is due to blood that has leaked out of the vein and into the tissue. Sometimes a phlebotomist will put the needle into your vein to collect the blood sample and end up going through the other side. You can tell this by when he or she inserts the needle and starts to pull it back out slightly to retrieve the blood. Other times its due to not enough pressure being applied to the site after the blood has been collected or pressure hasn't been applied for a long enough time. The bruise will go away after a few days to a week. It will get reabsorbed.

It depends on who is taking the blood. Really.

Taut muscles and bad insertion of the needle. If you are relaxed, you will feel little or nothing and have no after effect.
