Well, the last two respondents are basically correct: you can't play back a physical dvd without a dvd drive..but you can play back a *virtual* dvd disk image just as long as your computer has enough horsepower.

And that's (partially) what those applications you mentioned are capable of doing: mounting a virtual disk (cd, dvd, vcd, svcd, kvcd, etc) so that you can explore it's contents (like for playback if it's [for example] a virtual disk image of a dvd video). Playback of a virtual dvd video would also require the appropriate codec (which an application like WinDVD provides). Otherwise, the disk image would be treated like an explorable Windows (or Mac) file folder (especially if it is a disk image of a data disk).

One way to have a disk image on your computer without a dvd drive is to download one..like from one of the p2p networks. But these files are *huge* and take quite a while to download even with a broadband connection.

Technically, there's at least second way: you can network a computer without a dvd drive to a computer with a dvd drive and share the drive. There's uses for that. But then, in that case you'd already have a computer with a dvd drive!

Well.. if you don't have an internal dvd drive, you could purchase an *external* dvd drive (so as long as you have the appropriate port for it.. like, if it needs a usb port to connect, you'll need one of those open). Mind you, external dvd drives cost more than internal ones.

Although dvd players can play cds and even though dvds and cds are have the same length/width circumference dimensions cds and dvds differ in depth, file structure and capacity. Cd drives just don't have the horsepower or configuration to playback dvds; this was intentionally designed this way by the hardware manufacturers, as if you think about it, if anyone with a cd drive could playback dvds, then why would they 'upgrade' to a dvd drive? Both hardware components your cd drive as well as software specifications of your computer's OS and dvd burning/read/explore applications will reject attempts to read (physical) dvd disks of any kind. So, no (to anticipate what you might be thinking) that's why you can't even use one of the virtual disk mounting applications such as Daemon Tools to 'copy'/explore the contents from the physical dvd drive to a virtual one because (again), your cd drive won't touch the dvd to begin with.

Without a DVD drive you are out of luck, there is no way to read a dvd without one

daemon tools would allow you to mount a dvd image from your hard drive and access it as if it was a DVD. It basically gives you a virtual drive but you need the image on your drive.

DVD decryptor can be used to rip a dvd to your pc, if you have already downloaded it this isn't needed.

alcohol will write to CD/DVD so won't be much use without a writer

magicDISC and magicISO I don't know.

You can buy a DVD drive really cheaply these days a dvd read only drive is about £10 and a DVD writer can be had for about £40 or less.

You can't take an actual dvd and put it on your computer.

Why? -- because for your computer to read a dvd, it needs a dvd drive. Dvd drives have special lasers. These lasers are much smaller then Cd-drive lasers, so there's no way you can read a dvd with a cd-drive.

I know you probably downloaded those programs because they can create "virtual drives". I know all about virtual drives, though, and in your situation, that's not what you need -- you need an actual dvd drive. It's hard to put it in perspective. I guess you could put it this way: virtual drives are only for virtual discs. (Virtual discs are ISO's, NRG's, or some other form of disc image file.) Since you have a real disc, you need a real drive.

hope this helps...

You have to have a DVD player to read the DVD's. All the software tools in the world can't replace the hardware it takes to read the disk.

You NEED a dvd drive. It is possible to have a Movie or any DVD transferred to a VCD, but for you to read it, you most definitely need and internal or external DVD drive

Ok, this is going to sound like an ignorant answer. But the computer won't recognize a Blank CD...simply because its Blank. After you burn anything to a CD, thats when the CD Rom writes info the CD and it can be read. Hope this helps
