I am going to be studying BioMedical Engineering at college in the fall, and was wondering if there is any foreseeable future for this field in our world. What kind of future does the field of prosthetics have?

A great future, I think. I have a prosthetic leg. Cost over $7000. Takes some learning, but the future is walking, even cycling. Microprocessor controlled units are available for about $30,000 that will continuously adapt to what the wearer is doing and adjust their dynamics. I have a picture of a woman who lost both legs and completed the Iron Man in Hawaii. Seems that the world has a lot of folks that will not give up on their life just because one of their limbs went away. More talent in the field will mean better prosthetics and more reasonable prices (note that most medical insurance companies cringe at the prospect of supplying these things and are trying to put a cap on the number they will provide over your life and how much they will pay). So have at it and good luck. Bye the way, for a college student to inquire about the employment future in the major of their choice is seriously excellent.

HUGE future.

Prosthetics is always going to be needed, and needing new blood who can figure out how to engineer better solutions for current prosthetics, and especially cosmetic prosthetics that are so incredibly difficult to make. For instance, there has been a woman in the news who was referred to as The Woman With No Face after her boyfriend shot half her face off, including part of her jaw, entire nose, cheekbone, and part of maxilla.

I am also fascinated by the demand of sports prosthetics for athletes who lose limbs.

All over the world people get blown up, and more/better prosthetics are needed.

Go for it, you will love it, and be needed in the world.
