I have a cocker spaniel and they are notorious for pulling - my life was changed by the Halti - it's a miracle - No more pulling and a pleasure to walk the little man!. What I love about them is that they do not harm the dog in any way unlike choker collars which are cruel and harnesses that can hurt their tender underarms. IMPORTANT - get the safety lead on the Halti - it may come with it or you can be them separately - this attaches the halti to the normal collar - so, if the dog slips the halti (he may not like it first of all), the lead remains attached to the main collar.

You could try a head collar if you think that might help. The ultimate goal has to be train the dog to stop pulling though, for the sake of your own sanity if nothing else. I assume we're talking about large dog here, so your other options are a pronged collar, preferably in conjunction with a fabric choke collar, and a "big dog" lead, which is a relatively short leash with a fabric loop that acts as a handle positioned close to the clip. Every time your dog pulls or gets ahead of you at all, stop. Make him come back to heel, and preferably sit next you. It's good to stop periodically and have him sit, even if he's not pulling, just to reinforce your status. Give praise and/or treats appropriately,and he'll get the idea.

The halti is supposed to be very good, but i find a plain rope/slip-lead does the job. my dog used to be a tank on the lead.
Of course the most obvious thing to look at would be the dogs rank in the house. Its proven that a pack 'leader' walks in front of the lower ranking dogs. If your dog has top rank in the house..lower it and it will walk to heel.
dont allow it on ANY furniture. You eat before the dog does, you go through doorways and small gaps first. These are some quick easy ways to lower rank.

i tried chocker chain etc on my 2 dogs but found the only thing that worked was the halti. its a kind of harness that goes over the nose and head and the lead attatches to the side, if the dog tries to pull all they do is turn their head to the side. it doesnt hurt at all and our dogs prefer this to a collar.

Use an easy leader.

It is a two part collar. 1 part slips over the neck, as normal, but the second part slips over the muzzle of the dog.

It doesn't hurt the dog, it just prevents then from turning their head - and you don't get that horrible choking sound.

I am currently puppy walking a 9 month tri-coloured collie and use one.

Choke chains are a definate no-no as the last thing you should do is inflict pain.

Yes the Halti works quite well so does using a clicker. Youjust click when he doesnot pull and give him a treat. He then learns that not pulling gets rewards. Worked with my terrier-ist. but please do not use a choke chain they are really horrible, imagine if someone pulled your neck tie tight around your neck. I think it makes it worse as the poor dog tries to get away from it. Otherwise try some training classes. Look in Yellow pages or ask at the vets.

Haltis are great unless you have a breed with a short muzzle. Most dogs resent it at first.
A lot of people on this site recommend the Gentle Leader.

Try an anti pull harness;

But bottom line is whatever you use you need to train your dog.

a normal lead is OK, just change direction every time the dog starts to pull. This will show it who is in charge and will make it unsure of where you are going, and walk easier. It takes time but it works. Also if you turn so that you have to walk across the front of the dog, it will make it walk more closely to heel.

harness teach a dog to pull. i breed danes and we LOVE the head collar wears like a horses halter and clips under the chin. as soon as the dog pulls the very first time he sees the leash and collar will turn his head so he doesnt pull ! from the VERY first walk !! use it a few times then also wear the regular chokechain and switch back during the walk till he pulls then go back to the head collar till he "gets" you wont take pulling. make sure you just use the head collar for a month or so before you try the choker.
