They should. Some people have to keep them on for longer than others depending on how serious the problem is. I barely wore my retainer after my braces came off and my teeth shifted a bit. It's been about 15 years since I had braces and a few of my teeth slightly moved back toward the crooked position they were originally in but it's no where near as bad as before I had the braces. I blame it mostly on the fact that I never wore my retainer like I should have.

Braces can significantly help most malocclusions (crooked or misaligned teeth). Braces work by repositioning the teeth within the jaw bone. Orthopedic devices (such as palatal expanders) are often used to influence growth of the jaw bones at an early age. This can help to avoid or shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment.
Teeth can return to their original, crooked, positions. This is termed relapse and can be avoided by wearing retainers after completion of orthodontic treatment.

Since I am not a dentist and I do not wear braces, I wouldn't know. However, my friend used to wear braces 2 years ago. They definitely worked for her. She used to have a horrible overbite and now her smile looks much better.

Most of the time your orthodontist will know what they're talking about. If your teeth are really messed up, you may need to get head gear or other devices to help fix your teeth. But yes, they usually do work. And no, contrary to popular belief, they really don't hurt that bad.
