You and your friends are correct and you guys obviously know your history.

Most emo kids believe that "emo" stands for "emotional". This isn't true. The word emo came about from a style of music (from the '80s) called Emotive Hardcore Punk. Because of this misconception, the emo culture revolves around self-pity and exaggerated sadness.

Emo kids often believe that they have life very hard, but usually don't realize that everyone else is having the same problems. In order to appear especially emotional (or "emo" as they so believe) they often cut their wrists with razor blades. While this may seem very screwed up, the actual cuts they inflict do not hurt, or hurt very little, as they are very superficial.

The recognition and respect that the cutter will receive from the scene (emo community) when someone spots the cuts is normally their motivation, although some emo kids cut themselves to make themselves feel sadder and to make themselves feel alone.

Emo kids conveniently forget that millions of children are suffering and dying across the planet, and do not seem to realize that their own lives are soft and lazy compared.

Emo kids are very materialistic; without their possesions, makeup and clothes, they would lose their (perceived) individuality, which they value so much.

You were right.
Atleast you know your history.

But Emotional hardcore is really the correct term, since Emotive Hardcore was only being used, after emo died, to described emo-influenced indie bands. Emotional Hardcore came first. But theyre still the same thing.

I personally like emotive better, it sounds cooler :p

Emo way emotional. It is a kind of tune sure you are proper and it's also in most cases used as a stereotype to persons useful since of matters like their hair, their garments, their components, the tune they pay attention to. and many others. It generally is a sub-"style" of "Goth". I can give an explanation for this time period from a private factor of view since I get referred to as this, although I don't discover it offensive in any respect. A record of ""emo"" bands are: Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday and many others.

Emo is short for emotional. Emo music that you hear nowadays isn't like the original emo music that was played in the early '90s. It used to be an underground music scene that was, of course, gobbled up by MTV and major labels to cash in on.

Emo is a slang term used to describe a range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music and its related scene. As an adjective, emo can describe a style of fashion or music; or a general state of unhappiness or melancholy (as in to "feel emo"). Emo is also used as a noun, often pejoratively, to identify a member of the "emo scene" or someone viewed as fitting the "emo" stereotype easily being characterized by a straightened side-part hairstyle covering one eye.

I believe it stands for emotional, because the people characterized as "emo" often are very sensitive, cry a lot, are suicidal, and cut their wrists. But that's just a stereotype, just like preppy, jock, or geek.

Genre of soft core punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who don't smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.
