I was told by either HP or Microsoft help to close some processes to keep my computer from locking up. Even when all applications are closed and I come back after awhile, my PC is locked up and I have to press the power button to shut it off to restart.

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/index.html <--- here you find all processes that might be running in your taskmanager listed + information about them. If the process is not listed or it says that it is spy-ware or ad-ware than close it. (And find it in the register to prevent it from starting again when you restart the pc).

If you are unsure of the Task Manager, I would close all open programs, then

cl Start
cl Settings
cl Taskbar and Start Menu

cl the Start Menu tab
see how many programs you are loading at startup
can you reduce them?

I suggest you try:
1. Only load those programs you intend to work with every day, and
2. set your wallpaper and screensaver to blank or none. These are mostly graphics -- graphics use a lot of memory.

This should pretty well free up your memory.

It just may be that you are overloading your memory at startup.

After that, run a Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and defrag. These should be run regularly anyway.

I'd appreciate a note if you are successful.

Use the Bleeping Computer Startup Programs Database at:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

It is a great resource to weed out the un-needed start-ups on you machine.

Have fun.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
