I have a couple of suggestions 4 you. They have "Plumbers plugs" That U put in side of pipe & twist the wing nut so it expands. These R used in pipe fitting during testing a line. I know that they rent them 2. Measure the inside I.D. of the pipe and rent 1 that size, these R great if Ur going to have out of use 4 a while. Is the wax ring still on? How long R U not going to be using it? If it's a short term situation U can cover the top & put some weight on it. I would use a piece of ply wood if U go this way. 1 more way to plug it would be to start with a wad of newspaper & wrap it with Duct tape until it makes a good seal. If U use this BE sure that U have (in the satrt, in the paper) a 2-3' long peice of twine ir thin rope so you can pull it out easier. I hope this helps. You can also get some ideas from the followimg

You can use basically anything that is air tight....you don't need them sewer odors and fumes going into your house. For us, we just put a trash bag over the hole, then put tape around it.....making a good seal. Best of luck to you.

Wad up a work towel and stuff it inside nice and snug.
There is an item you can purchase to cap it off. But a good terry towel twisted and stuffed well will do fine.
