My car does about 36 miles per gallon on average.

This works out at about 8 miles per litre.

So therefore it consumes 0.125 litres every mile.

You can't compare the two measurements. You need to know how much the engine uses per mile and that depends on gear ratios and other efficiency factors for the engine.

You might want to rephrase that question. Did you mean how many liters are in a gallon? If that's what you meant I think it's 3.8 or something close to that.

average car does around 30mpg divide that by 4.5 to get litres per mile...
