We feel that we must have either hand dryers or paper towels to dry our hands in public places (I've never seen a house with a hand drier, have you?)

Given that most people will use one or the other, I am assuming you will be comparing the resources used to create, distribute, and dispose of the paper product versus the electricity to use the hand drier.

BTW, assuming coal is used to generate the electricity (2.2lbs of CO2 per kWH) a typical hand drier that runs for 15 seconds generates the following CO2:

2.5kw * 15s* 1hr/3600s * 2.2lbs of CO2= 0.02 lbs of CO2 or 2/100's of a pound of CO2 placed into the atmosphere.

They have to be built, which uses up resources such as metals and energy, which usually involves invasion of the environment. And in operation, it's doubtful if they use less energy to dry hands effectively than the energy it takes to manufacture paper towels, or to even wash hand cloth towels. The chief advatange it offers to establishments using them is decreasing maintenance costs of handling and disposal of paper or cloth towels, but they're nearly non-existent in homes because they're ineffective, wasteful of both time and energy.

They use electricity. Depending on the area, at least a portion of that electricity is probably generated in some fashion that produces greenhouse gases.

The dyson dryers paintings. not one of the others are well worth utilising. i admire the blue "roll down" hand towels appropriate. whilst they have run out, they are gathered and washed so as that they get re-used. you basically tug on the textile to get the quantity you want.
