Therustdoctor.com offers a non toxic latex paint especially made for metal. My birds have never chewed on their cages because I add cholla wood, pine cones and such I highly recommend the paint, have used it on bird cages and never had a problem. Good luck on your search and have a tweet year.

Look for non-toxic, low fumes, child safe (if it's safe for kids it's better than not) When you redo the paint, sand it down completely and make sure it's smooth and clean.
Spray it completely and let it dry in the sun. Do it again, and don't let it run so there are globs that your bird could ingest. Let it dry in the sun and air out for longer than 7 days.

What happened to the previous occupant? Did it die? if so...
throw the cage in the dump (so no one else can use it) because the possibility of the same disease affecting your bird is very high and likely! There are tons of web sites that have fantastic cages at unbelievable prices! I bought 6 cages that were 80x40x76 and they are HUGE! for only $700.00 each! An African Grey would practically get lost in one of these. They are double units and can be used as one or two cages. Maybe later on you'll get another bird and then you could just use the divider.

I would not chance using any paint on bird cage as they do use thier beaks to climb and also bite the bars from time to time. Also the paint can leach into water source or food source and may rust as well which releases lead and zinc. I would consult with vet or paint companies or just buy new cage. I use only stainless steel cages as they are safe and I have no worries. More expensive but worth it.

It would be best to take it to a shop and get it powder coated. Since birds chew on their cages any kind of paint would eventually chip and they would digest it, which is toxic. If the paint is already chipping off you should consider investing in a new cage.

The only safe way to redo the cage is zinc free powder coating.

No paint is safe for birds, but if you do use paint, take him out of the cage first, then use paint that's non-toxic, because they will peck at it and can be dangerous. Don't ask yourself what is good for the cage, instead ask what's good for your bird.

You cannot use any type of paint really...you need to find a lead and zinc free type. Which can be hard. It would be easier to buy a new cage...
