There were two main things one was the crucial step in cutting trade down the Mississippi when Vicksburg fell on July the 4 th 1863 the river was open and the Confederacy was lost. The Union victory guaranteed Lincolns election, neither particular appealing to me. God Bless You and Our Southern People.

Union General US Grant, was staging his forces at Shiloh for the next battle. Confederate General AS Johnston massed his forces and surprised Grant. On the first day of battle, Grant was nearly driven off the field. Johnston was killed during battle, thinking the South had won. On the second day, with reinforcements helping him, Grant repulsed the Confederates. After the battle Grant was relieved of his command and thought about quitting the US army.
