When I last visited the UK I learned about a demonstration which took place last year in which Muslims were demonstrating quite forcefully with banners and chanting, "Kill the infidels" I am a Muslim convert and from everything I have read Islam promotes Peace and goodwill to all. What the hell is going on?

First of all: as to "what is an infidel?" The word comes from the Latin meaning "without faith."
As to the second part of your question? No one has to be killed.

Anyone who believes differently than the muslims is an "infidel". Some will use the Qu'ran and imply that it instructs to "kill infidels". It does not make this statement. Just another example of how bad people can and will use religion to justify a political or personal act.

Infidels are non-believers and " Kill infidels" is a slogan which is linked to islam for nothing !! as you have said that islam promotes peace and goodwilll , thats true.......there is no place for killling anyone in islam as we believe that killling a single person means killing the whole humanity !!!
Now comming to that wht you have seen so i could have believed that for some muslim country but not for UK !!! because muslims can't dare that in UK atleast.......and Again whoever beleive in such things are not muslims.They are just ignorant who don't hve insight of Islam.........They are misguided. islam is no doubt a religion of peace !!
And yes killing is only allowed if muslims are attcked by some wicked power !! if you are muslim you must have read the verses in quran about that !!!

I think an infidel is anyone who isn't Muslim, and definitely anyone who critizes it. For example, the Muslim religion is supposed to be one of peace - like you said. However, they go around killing people who don't believe in their prophet. So people say it's a violent religion, and then the Muslims label THOSE people as MORE infidels that need to be killed. Nope, not ironic at all for a 'peaceful' religion.

An infidel is a non believer.
All religions (obviously) have them. It seems that only Muslims and Christians want to kill them, though.

Maybe you should have looked into Islam more closely before jumping in with both feet.
Islam teaches peace through submission.
An infidel is anyone who is not submitted to the teachings of the Quran, i.e., followers of Allah.
Islam teaches death to infidels, not tolerance towards them.

Infidels are type of painful ear mite, which infects many Muslims.
They have tried many types of chemical cures, but the old fashioned method of removng the infidel with a sharp sword still seems to work best.
