Sir , I have and I couldn't quite believe that one could still breathe as the speed increased to a heady 18 miles in one hour!
Since that day I have used the train on a regular basis and I have even bought stock in Mr Brunels railway company!
I still use the carriage and four to drive to my cotton mill though.
Your servant,sir.

I traveled across the US twice by Amtrak (coach no cabin) and found it to be pleasant and comfortable. In the past few years there are fewer trains running so I imagine those that are will be pretty crowded. I know you have to reserve a sleeping berth nearly a year ahead of time. Trains are great, take you right into the heart of cities. Sooner or later when gas is too expensive to buy, trains will come back and I hope it doesn't take us long to get more trains back on the tracks. Amtrak is really pretty nice and efficient. Food is excellent on the trains.

I once travelled by steam train from Cape Town South Africa to Lusaka in Zambia. The journey went through Botswana and went over the Zambezi at the Victoria Falls to Livingstone and took 4 days because it was single track most of the way and the train often had to wait in a sort of train lay-by for a southward bound train to pass. There were two engines, one at the front of the train pulling and one at the back, pushing because from sea level Cape Town to Lusaka the land rises up to 4200 feet. (about 1600 metres high). Each evening a Conductor came along and opened up the seats in the compartment to make up the beds - there were 2, 4 and 6 berth compartments, each with a hand basin and there were little lights over each bunk There was a shower at the end of each coach - what bliss when it was 36C outside and no air conditioning. At meal times the Conductor walked the length of the train banging on a little xylophone to tell you to go to the dining car. At many of the stops there was no platform and it is surprising how high trains are when you have to climb on to them - you have to get up on to the train before you can go inside the train - which is why you went ON a train, common sense really.

Yes, train travel is 1,000 times more fun than air travel for the following reasons.
On the long haul Amtrak trains the seats recline to a sleeping position.
You have room for your things. You can take with you your own food and drinks (but not alcohol).
You can get up and walk around all you want. You aren't trapped with a seat belt, turbulance is rare.
You tend to solcialize more on a train then a cattle car airplane.
You can dine in the dining car. Get snacks and drinks in the Snack Bar.
You can see parts of the country that you will never see on a plane.
You can play games, watch tv, use your computer (no internet that I am aware of).
Life can be fun. Try it, you will like it.

Yep, Sacramento, California to Washington, DC. in 1954. And the return trip. My grandfather died. Done some bus trips also but most of my travel has been by air or private automobile.

Yes I have, although why do we say "on a train" when really we're in it? The same applies to watching stuff "on" TV.
The Germans are much more sensible in this respect referring to travelling in a train or watching something in the TV.
