It depends on the ppe - If it was issued to you then no as while it remains the duty of both the employer and the employee to avoid accidents where ever possible and to take all necessary precautions if you are issued with the wrong ppe then liability should fall solely on the employer for placing you in danger. This should also mean that your insurance claim should be simple (however they and their insurance company will drag it out as long as possible - BTW don't sign up with a no win no cost legal firm as they will probably rip you off - See if you can get legal aid). This is because your employer has a duty of care towards you - i.e. if they ask you to undertake potentially dangerous activity then they must take all steps to protect you and this includes supplying the correct ppe.
If however you supplied the ppe knowing the level required then you are guilty of gross misconduct for placing yourself (and possibly co-workers) in danger - your employer would be well within their rights to dismiss you.
Hope this helps

If you knew that they were the wrong ppe's then its your fault. But that doesn't mean that you will get sacked.
They cant sack you for injuring yourself. They have to have a valid reason or else its unfair dismissal.
If you knew they were wrong you wont get any claims but your job should be safe.

Personally, I think you're a Compo hunter. It was probably your own fault and someone said the magic words!! "you might have a claim"..Study the the small print in your contract. Make sure all the lines had dots and commas. Next, find a rich, grabbing solicitor and sob your socks off. He'll then take your firm to court at our expense and land you a bit of money...after he's took his! and then ask your boss if can stay on..thats if the law says he can sack you...you parasite.!
