I am fed up with yahoo posters, answering questions with complete lack of understanding and ignorance. I want this question answered by scientists and not dead beats with their own unfounded personel opinions - IF YOU ARE NOT A SCIENTIST DONT ANSWER.

I would like to start taking multi vitamins to supplement my diet. However I have read conflicting reports on the use of vitamin pills ie; do they actually work or can vitamins only be extracted by the body by breaking down food etc.

Vitamins contained in supplements are absorbed by the body, and can serve several purposes, especially if you don't think you eat a well balanced diet. I'm a registered dietitian and I always recommend a multi-vitamin to anyone who doesn't think they are getting enough nutrients from their meals.
That said, the vitamins and minerals contained in the foods you eat, are slightly better quality, and some are more readily absorbed than those in tablets.

I am sorry I am not a scientist or anything but have been studying
herbal remedies for anything from sunburn to diabetes to cancer for about 10 years.
I have heard many doctors say that when they xray patients they often see a build up of undesolved vitamins in their system.
When possible it is best to get liquid, gel caps or something more easily dissolvable.
Also many vitamins and herbs work together best when they optimize each other. Example, when taking Calcium, Vitamin D optimizes it. As well you need to take magnesium with calcium to cut the risk of bone spurs. For every 100 mg of calcium you should take 50 mg of magnesium.
Personally I do not take a multivitamin. I take vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements in more effective combinations. I take for memory, focus, etc...in the morning...Ginkgo, Vitamin B complex, etc. At night I take 1,000 mg calcium, 500 mg magnesium, Vitamin D, and potassium. In the afternoon I take antioxidents and whatever I need for whatever happens to be bothering me most (eyes, aches,...) .
The medical field often tells people that natural supplements are ineffective because they want people to take the drugs. You do have to be careful some supplements are not good to take with some medications. Example, if you take kudama do not take supplements that thin or thicken blood like Vitamin K.

Not knowing any specifics on your health I can not give you more specifics for what might be good for you personally.

Ideally we should be able to obtain all of our vitamins and nutrients from food. But we don't. For many reasons, being one of them the fact that some processes completely destroy the content of nutrients in a given food.
Our body can definitely use vitamins from supplements. It is actually a good way of providing the necessary nutrients that we don't get from food.
