When I was fifteen my cat (who was ten at the time) developed a disease called Triad. It effected her intestines, pancreas, and stomach and she had stopped eating, lost a lot of weight, and was always throwing up. After taking her to the vet I was told that even with the best surgery they could offer (which would cost about $4,000) she still would only have about a 15-25% chance of surviving. In the end I had to make the decision to put her to sleep. I didn't want her to suffer anymore. Explain this to your daughter, if you haven't already, that her cat was very sick and there the doctor didn't have any medicine to make her/him better. The loss of a pet (to me a cat is a family member) is very rough and it will take a few days to recover from your loss.

I don't know if you have any intentions of getting another cat afterwards but if so I would recommend waiting a little while because your daughter may view that your actions are trying to "replace" your last cat. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope everything goes well.

I am so sorry about what you have to go through today and the days to come.

Make sure that you let your daughter say goodbye to her cat and you can explain that she gave her kitty lots of love and a good life while it was here. Tell her that her kitty knows that she loved it and it will be better off and it will not be in any more pain.

If you can bury the kitty at home then you can have a memorial service and bury it with some of it's favorite toys and/or blanket.

If you will take the kitty home to be buried, make sure that the vet doesn't wrap it up in plastic or stick it in a bag for you to take home....that is an awful way to see a pet once it's passed away. Whatever you bring the kitty in to the vet's office, use to bring the kitty back with.

Also, I recommend that you be there with the kitty as it's put down to sleep. It's one of the hardest things that you can do, but it's good to know that you will be with your animal when it's put down and it's not with strangers. You can ease the fear that your animal goes through being at the vet by itself.

I don't know if getting a new kitty right away is the way to go. That is something you'll have to decide for yourselves. If you do get a new kitty, then you may want to wait for a few months. You can't replace one animal with another one, you all need time to grieve for your loss.

Don't have her go in when it is done. But do bring the cat home if you can so she can say goodbye and bury her.
I would give it a few weeks and then maybe look to replace the cat. Tell your daughter you want to get a cat that picks her. That she'll know the new cat when she meets the right one.

Sorry about your cat. We had 3 of the five we had die last year over a 6 months time. All were older cats. It was horrible. My husband and I love our cats. About a month later I found 2 kittens about a week apart. They both pick me to come home with.
They are great. Kittens have a way of repairing a grieving heart.

Good luck.

I do hope this isn't too late. I don't agree with your vet. My cat had the same thing and we operated successfully. I received feedback from the Holistic Pet Group and this is what they sent for financial assistance:

There are groups out there that will help you. One of the most effective groups is http://www.imom.org/ Established in 1998, they screen their applicants carefully but they can help you out if you qualify.

This is an organization that will try very hard to help you if you cannot afford vet bills once in a while. Or maybe you find a hurt or sick stray that needs medical help. They're called Help-A-Pet
http://www.help-a-pet.org/home.html

Also these sites may help with costs :

Acme House of Cats--they have an Acme Fund

Ask your local Humane Society if there is a low-cost vet near you. One person had a cat whose urinary tract blocked from crystals forming in the urinary tract. One vet wanted $800.00 and said that an operation was needed. A second opinion was sought at another clinic. The cat was sedated, a tube was inserted into the urinary tract relieving the build-up of urinary. That, plus a
couple of days of hospital stay, plus medications and several flushings of the urinary tract came to $186.00.

It will cost you to have him put to sleep so why not at least try to save him.
If you are absolutely positive he can't be helped then you can take him to the vet and hold him while he is being put to sleep. That is so much more comforting to them than just handing them over to a stranger to discard. It is very quick with a needle in the paw. No flinching, no last minute gasps. It is almost immediate once they put the needle in.

its on no account an consumer-friendly element to choose, there are various components to evaluate, maximum animals do not attack for no reason, prehaps that cat has had a undesirable existence or has been mishandled/mistreated for this reason it lashes out, some animals do not know any different, prehaps the proprietors have on no account disiplened the animal while its executed this way of element so the cat thinks its okay to do it. there is many different motives, attempt and picture of why the cat may be appearing like this

get another cat to help the ease. Tell your daughter that everything dies. Tell her that it is good for the cat because if the cat lives he would be in very much pain. If you put the cat down then he won't be in pain anymore. Tell her that it is for the best. Tell her that you can buy her balloons once in a while so that she can let it go and it will float up into the cat heaven and your cat will get it.

Hope this helps.

Spend a lot of time with the cat before. Still if there is a chance that the cat will live then u should take it. Also i might be a little easier on u both if u got another cat.

i had gotten a 4 month old kitten last february (two actually). and she was the best kitty ever. she was my baby. i unfortunately had to put her down right after surgery because the vet suspected she had FIP. She had blood in her abdomen, nodules all over her liver and they couldnt remove the mass inside her without causing her to bleed to death. one of the hardest decisions i've ever had to make. but i had to let her go. the next weekend my boyfriend took me to go adopt a new kitty. then i got another.. and now i have 3 kitties. and i love them all very much. but i think it definately helps to get another. or two. I also got my kitty cremated and i have her ashes. when i didnt have her around at all those two weeks the house felt empty to me. but as soon as i got her ashes back, i felt like she was back again..

HI, I just had my cat that i had for 18 years put down, He was lame and had bad teeth and couldn't eat anything but soft food which effected his bowels, and coat, I had to forget my heart breaking and think of the cat. Its time for you to do that if you have done everything else and nothing helps, and I bet your daughter will agree. Good luck with your decision, its sure not easy....
