It's actually the Holy Spirit of God that resides in you if you are born again, and yes it is the One that leads you "if" you are living in the Spirit instead of the flesh. It is a constant battle. Day to day you have to choose to live in either the flesh or the Spirit. As you grow you learn the difference in the characteristics between the two.

The Holy Spirit confirms with our spirit what is true and the directions we should go. We are to love God in Spirit and in truth. This is possible as we abide in Him. If we are attentive to His leading, we will do what is right, including knowing which church He would have us attend. It may not be what we think is right, but we know His will in our heart and soul. This is more than just our conscience bothering us about something. It is about letting God be the Lord of our lives 24/7.

....so, I would say that man's opinions without the Holy Spirit's
guidance will lead him down the wrong path.

It is the Holy Spirit that guides a individuals path, but if that certain individual does not have the Holy Spirit then to me, he/she if not dead, then blind. We all have to search to make the Holy Spirit's guidance more potent in our everyday life. For Christ provided us with his words for our everyday life's living.
