Water and gravity. I just completed an experiment. Plants will grow for a while in complete darkness. However, without gravity they will not be able to know which way to come out the soil.
that is the problem NASA is facing with living in space, and growing food.

soil of course, proper temperature, and high humidity,introduce light as soon as plant makes it's break thru the soil introduce medium light use a bucket or something to shade until it reaches approx. 1.5 inches then full sun and monitor
