It lets you know what is in the food you are eating. Without reading labels, you have no way of knowing the nutritional value of food. And you would probably be very surprised by the amount of sodium and sugar in the every day things we eat, neither of which are good for you and definitely not in excess.

It is important because nowadays the food is so processed that it's not what it looks like. For example, your "traditional" chicken soup might be loaded with sodium (more than what your body needs for the whole day). Also, lots of processed foods have (unnecessary) sugar added. Reading labels makes us smarter to choose what is good for us.

Reading food labels is helpful because it can tell you exactly what you are eating, and what the serving size is.
