As far as I know, one's religion has nothing to do with getting a dog - at least not in the United States. You didn't mention where your Muslim friend lives - so I am assuming here in America. (?)

Restrictions for dogs vary from state to state (and has nothing to do with the owner's religion, race or sex) and also Land Lords may have restrictions.

Pit Bulls are increasingly not desired - so steer clear of this breed.

Mostly keep the dog in a fenced yard or tied up and provide the dog with access to food, water and shelter from the weather (dog house).

Land Lords in many places do not want dogs in the house. Some do not want dogs on the property at all because inside dogs sometimes destroy property and sometimes outside dogs tend to dig holes in the yard.

Always check what the Land Lord's restrictions are is on pets. I am still wondering why your friend being Muslim has anything to do with it. Why cant he just be your friend regardless of his religion?

Islam forbids the caging of any animal but as a muslim they look at dogs as unclean and they wont touch the dog or have its spit on them this is why we are having such a problem with guide dogs in taxis that are driven by muslims in the Uk at the moment, although an iman told me being in a car with a dog is fine...
