Although not all sopranos and tenors are overweight, overweight people tend to have higher voices. More fat in the body means more estrogen and estrogen is one ingredient in having a higher voice.

They're not all overweight! A very good friend of mine is a soprano, and she's twice as small as I am, and all of my other friends say I'm as skinny as a toothpick! That soprano friend can be be pretty dang loud, too, and with a good vibrato. I also know of a tenor who has one of the best voices I have ever heard : Ray Gabbert (don't know if I got the last name right). He's been in a lot of famous operas and musicals all over the world. He's a former student of my current choir teacher; he came into our class once, and he is nowhere close to being overweight. (He does a GREAT job on "Bring Him Home", by the way. It's a piece from "Les Miserables".)

Not all of them. Most of them like Andrea Bocelli or Pavarotti are kind of overweight but that has to do with genetics and their big in carbs diet (remember italians eat a lot of pasta!). Actually there is a group called IL DIVO, and they are very handsome and slender men that break the stereotype of the average tenor. Remember sometimes music companies sell the face than the actual quality of the music. However good music isn't affected by a few pounds and the fact that some are overweight means that it has to be good music if they don't have an image to sell
;)

Not all sopranos are overweight. I'm a soprano and I'm underweight. Also, Maria Callas and Cecilia Bartoli are both slender.

If they are not overweight, there would not be enough room for air circulation to produce full sound.
