You'd think there's some kind of blueberry shortage.

Berries are all very fragile -- short shelf life and hard to transport without spoiling.

Blueberries are cultivated in only a few areas.

The shakers used to harvest the berries, the chemicals used as pesticides use petrochemicals (oil) and tied to oil prices.

Supply and demand, cost of cultivating, harvesting, storage and transport all affect prices.

I don't know about shortages, but I live in one of the densest blueberry production areas in the world... 'don't know of any significant weather or other source of shortages. However, they have become more popular as a source of healthy antioxidants, etc. Maybe there is greater demand.

There actually is somewhat of a shortage. Blueberries are not found as much as other fruit.

Berries of any kind are literally not in season immediately. at the same time as inventory is low, expenses go up. that is probable why the were so breath taking, yet there are lost of recipes you should use frozen blueberries for.
