With all gambling questions, the amount you should take is the amount you can afford to lose. Even the best players in the world lose from time to time. So it doesn't matter how good a player you are, don't bet more than you can afford to leave on the table.

if you are speaking of no limit holdem ...

the buyin at a 1/2 game is typically $60 min and $300 max. if you understand shortstack strategy, then buying in for 60 is fine .... to maximize profits you should buy in for the full $300.

You should have at least 2-3 buyins with you because with variance, even an expert can easily lose 1-2 buyins

If money is an issue, a tournament may be a better idea. Many casinos have daily tournaments where the buy in is somewhere between 50-100 dollars, and you can play for several hours, and first prize can be somewhere around $3000

If you play limit holdem, $200 is more than enough to bring if you are going to be playing 2/4 limit holdem and you understand the game ...... losing 100 big blinds in a day would be an awful lot

I try and buy in for as much as i can in a no-limit game because when the money goes in i like to have the maximum profitability on the hand. Being the big stack has it advantages over being an average stack for sure. But if you only buy in for 100 bucks that's OK in a 1-2 no limit game, just be sure that you don't buy in for a small amount because you won't have enough money to push anyone out of the hand. good luck.

my boyfriend goes and plays about once a week...or at least every other week. Is a fairly strong player and he plays 3-6 and usually takes $40-$60...BUT if he takes $60 and gets down to $20 he leaves. Luckily lately he's been leaving with $200+ ..GOOD LUCK!!!

The Horseshoe casino here has 1-3 for limit. Min buyin is $30, but I reccomend coming in with $100. You're not shortstacked coming in, but you don't have such a huge pile that you're overconfident.
