Depends. Ws it a crime or a traffice law violation? Most first time DUI's are non-criminal traffic violations and most depts only bar for felonies. Its all how they word it. Some say no felony DUI, others say none at all.
How long ago? If it has been a while (I'd say a few years) and you've been clean and had a responsible life, I wuldn't worry.
Best bet, ask. Usually the website says flat out and LA has a very in depth web site. You will be investigated and they will make a choice based on what they see. They just don't like patterns of bad behavior or contempt for laws. They know everyone makes a mistake. Be prepared for a grilling though and don't lie ot hold back. Be honest and open, show remorse and show you learned. If its been years, I wouldn't sweat it. My friend is a cop here on long island (highest paid in the nation 100,000 year) and he has two DWI's. They were both several years old though and he was a different person.
good luck

We had an officer on our department that had a DUI on his record. It had no effect, we think, because of his military background. He's recently been fired, but we know now that a DUI on your record must not carry much weight. DUI in our state is just a serious misdemeanor. If you've been convicted of an aggravated misdemeanor or a felony tho, you're SOL, and rightly so.

If you look on the recruitment part of their website, I'm sure, like most PD's, they outline what convictions will automatically disqualify you, and what will not. Most state no felony convictions at all, or within the last ten years. Most also will not consider anyone who has ever been convicted of family violence.

I would check the website. The should have an employment/ recruitment page that talks about all this.

As long as you are openly honest about it, on your application, during interviews, when you are given the polygraph, then I don't think they will have a problem with hiring you.

Its if you lie about it that they have a problem with it.

You still got a shot, but you might not be considered quickly.
