I'm woried that by getting my eyes used to wearing glasses they will get worse and will become reliant on the glasses....

Thanks for all the responses... I'm told that one way for you eyes to digress is by steering a screen for a couple of hours a day... does that have a correlation with the use of glasses?

Just to clarify... just like a screen can make your vision worse is there anything (aside from glasses) that can make it better?

First, it has never been shown that the refractive state of your eyes will change because you do or do not wear corrective lenses. So, you eyesight will not get worse by wearing glasses.

But, you may indeed become more dependent on glasses after wearing them. Without glasses, your brain is learning how to interpret fuzzy shapes with better educated guesses. Once you start presenting clear images to your brain, you may lose some of that interpreting ability. Also, you may get used to seeing things without squinting, pushing your head forward, or pulling your eyes and enjoy being able to take in images without having to study them. This is what creates the sensation of "reliance."

If you are nearsighted than the glasses you have are only suitable to see distant objects like the blackboard or TV. You should not use your distance glasses for close-up activities because 1) You are shortsighted and see close up things unaided and better than for distant things and 2) Glasses that are meant for distant use are bad for near work as they cause eyestrain and are too strong at shorter distances..this leads to worse vision over time if you keep doing it. To stop vision getting worse you should take breaks and focus at distant objects every 10-15 minutes when using a computer and take your glasses off when you are on the computer. You should only use glasses when you want to see clearly..there is no need to wear them all the time especially for close work.

It depends on your age. Normally, your distance vision will be stable from the age of 21.
I understand you're concerned, but don't worry. The glasses won't make your vision worse.

If you are really worried, let your doctor reassure you!

According to all my doctors that is not true... with or without glasses your eyes will decline. I'm now reliant on glasses for distance but at this point there is nothing I can do to go back.

good luck!

uhhh no. glasses help you see better.. they wont mess up your vision any worse... your vision over time will get worse but that is not caused by the glasses. if you so concerned with getting glasses just get contacts. i have them and they work wonders. but no glasses will not ruin your vison, it will not worsen because of glasses... they will get worse naturaly. and in that case all you will need is a stronger lense... thats it.

Nope, not true. Your eyes naturally digress in power, especially if anyone in your family wears them. The only reason you will become dependent on them is because you need them to be able to see.

Another poster was thinking of the "SEE CLEARLY" method of improving eyesight. They have been shut down because it was a scam.

There is a company that believes that. I have never attempted to use their product, and I can't remember their name. But Mariette Hartley promotes them, I think. Maybe you could google for her and see if it comes up.

Doubt it will happen unless you have astigmatism. Ask your eye doctor for clarification.More than likely it would improve your vision.
