A home theater system. Here are my suggestions...

Speakers - Hsu Research VT-12 and STF-2
Receiver - Onkyo TX-DS504
DVD Player - Pioneer DV-45A Elite

That should cover it. Oh wait, good cables are a must...

Cables - DH Labs Silver Sonic

Or, if you already have a home theater and want an HDTV,
here's what I would like to suggest for you to consider...

Westinghouse LTV-37w2 HD

or

Sony KDL-32XBR950 (my choice but might be a little over $1k)

I agree keep saving it. It matters who you are if you are wise keep it in your bank or childs saving. If you are a person who likes to have fun buy some electronics and have fun with it.
